Award-Winning Earthquake Preparedness for Homeowners
Living in California means we must consider the possibility of earthquakes and their impact on our homes. In 2014, Napa experienced an earthquake, reminding us that we’re vulnerable and that being prepared can make all the difference.
Post-earthquake, FEMA, ZFA staff, and the Applied Technology Council (ATC) developed a prescriptive guide for seismic preparedness: Earthquake Strengthening of Cripple Walls in Wood-Frame Dwellings. This helpful guide provides a plan set with details to aid savvy homeowners with strengthening their homes and being prepared for the next earthquake.
Earthquake Strengthening of Cripple Walls in Wood-Frame Dwellings has gone on to win a SEAONC 2016 Excellence in Engineering Award of Merit, and has been entered for a SEAOC 2016 Excellence in Engineering Award of Merit, at the state level. The jury recognized the merits of this project saying: “It’s good to have a guideline for savvy homeowners who want to be prepared,” and “This is an important service from the SE community to further mitigate seismic hazard.”
Many thanks to ZFA’s Steve Patton, SE and Gayle Jensen for their significant contributions to this project. ZFA is proud to serve our community and help ensure the safety of homes throughout California and beyond. Click here to get your free download.
