Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Central Plant NPC Upgrade
San Jose | California
In order to meet state-mandated seismic performance requirements of SB 1953, SCVMC’s Central Plant which provides utilities to buildings on the campus, required a nonstructural performance category (NPC) upgrade.
Throughout the design and analysis phase, ZFA worked in close collaboration with members of the hospital’s Facilities Staff. ZFA performed extensive field surveys to document over 150 pieces of mechanical and electrical equipment that had been installed over the last 60 years, including emergency power generators, electrical switch gear and conduit, piping and fire suppression systems. The existing anchorage and bracing was evaluated for conformance with the approved codes. New anchorage and bracing details were engineered where existing conditions were deficient.
Additionally, a testing program was developed to verify the adequacy of existing anchor bolts embedded in concrete. All construction and testing work was designed to minimize service interruption of the equipment which is vital to the hospital’s daily operation.
