San Jose City College Media Arts Center

San Jose | California

The new San Jose City College Media Arts center is a 26,000 square foot facility comprised of a distinct theatre and lobby building, as well as an adjacent four-story tower which houses recording studios and multi-purpose classrooms.

The theatre building will house fixed stage and backstage functions, an audio-visual control room and approximately 240 seat auditorium with high ceilings and a system of steel framed suspended steel catwalks that provide access to lighting and other audio visual systems. The adjacent lobby building houses a green room, restroom facilities, ticketing, concessions, catering and additional space for gathering prior to and after events.

Structural concrete walls with a steel framed roofing system were chosen for the theatre and lobby buildings in order to best accommodate the architectural, acoustic and structural design criteria. The classroom tower utilizes concrete walls below the third floor and steel special moment resisting frames above which allows for open floor plans and access to natural light.
