Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Service Building Replacement

Santa Clara | California

The new SCVMC service replacement building is 145,000sf steel framed structure with three levels above grade, a subterranean level, and a large mechanical penthouse on top. To ensure continued operations of the nearby acute care facility, the building has been designed to an essential facility performance level utilizing buckling restrained braced frames around the perimeter. The building includes material management dock facility, a main kitchen, and offices for various administrative functions. A new service tunnel is also provided to connect the Services Building to the Main Hospital.

This project was delivered under a design-build format with original bridging documents provided by the County. Various structural cost saving strategies were identified during the RFP phase which helped reduce the anticipated schedule and ultimately reduce total building related costs; including the reevaluation of the originally proposed deep pier foundation systems and the eventual use of a more economical spread footing system.
Prior to joining ZFA, Principal Colin Blaney served as principal-in-charge and SEOR on this project.
