Mendocino High School Modernization

Category: Learn
Mendocino, CA

This project involved a major modernization and seismic strengthening of the main building on campus, a 20,750-square-foot structure built in 1948. The goal was to utilize most of the existing building shell while reorganizing the interior space for modern learning.

ZFA worked diligently with QKA to minimize the lateral system modifications to avoid triggering a required rehabilitation that would be detrimental to the project budget and construction schedule. While the required rehabilitation was avoided, the design team and the Mendocino Unified School District agreed that strategic strengthening of the building to meet current code requirements would be prudent. With this approach, the building received all new plywood shear walls and roof diaphragms, and chord and collector framing was incorporated to more effectively tie the building together.

The result was a ductile and resilient structure that balances state-of-the-art learning spaces with the scenic environment and ocean views. A Student Union, two science labs, and a food service kitchen are among the new spaces. The main corridor of the building was preserved and continues to display photos of every class since the first graduating class of 1896. The facility is also zero net energy and carbon neutral.
