Camp Newman, located in the hills northeast of Santa Rosa, encompasses a year-round retreat center and summer camp. Set on a 500-acre hillside property, the camp suffered almost a complete loss in the Tubbs Fire of 2017, with 81 of the camp’s 90 structures destroyed.
After this devasting event, the camp’s ownership group committed to rebuild bigger and better. Partnering with an energetic and dynamic local design-build team, upgraded and resilient structures were conceived that maintained the long-standing culture while providing many new and exciting features.
Over the course of a decade-long rebuild, many new buildings and site structures were added for different uses, including dormitories, community spaces, performing arts, and amenity spaces for dining and gathering.
ZFA provided structural design and construction support for most of these structures, including two- and three-story, wood-framed cabins; roofs over large open spaces; heavy timber decks and walkways; and various site structures such as stairs, shade structures, and retaining walls.
