Hayward Fire Station No. 6

Category: Work
Hayward, CA

Fire Station No. 6 is a two-story, double-company fire station with 3.5 apparatus bays, located on the Hayward Fire Training Center campus. The structural design provides Immediate Occupancy performance as an Essential Service Facility. The building houses classrooms for a training facility, administrative offices, support facilities such as turnout and locker rooms, an emergency operations center, fitness facilities, and residential spaces (dorms, a kitchen, and a day room). The roof-mounted photovoltaic system assists in operations power. The station also houses an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit—a specialty firefighting apparatus for aircraft that will protect the adjacent and connected Hayward Airport.

The project features a two-stage structural system working together. The upper level uses metal stud framing and shear walls, while the lower level is composed of structural steel framing, concrete over metal deck floor, and cast-in-place board form concrete and shotcrete walls. To create open interiors and a striking entry, the design employs long-span steel framing paired with expansive glazing. CMU walls were incorporated where they offered the best value. A concrete mat slab foundation manages differential settlement to meet essential service standards.

The facility was permitted under the jurisdiction of the DSA and it serves as the headquarters station for the City of Hayward and Hayward Airport, while also functioning as the new classroom home for the Chabot College Fire Academy.
