The Lodge at Pebble Beach Renovation

Category: Work
Pebble Beach, CA

The renovation of the Lodge at Pebble Beach was a unique project from a structural perspective, as the building is well over 100 years old and has undergone various additions and renovations. The project involved a full renovation of the Stillwater Bar & Grill, Tap Room, Kitchen, Bakery, Back of House, Pacific Room, Stanton Room, and Stevenson Room, an expansion of the Library Room to serve as an event space, a new second-floor event terrace with stairs and an elevator, an expansion of the outdoor terrace, and various landscape improvements. These improvements significantly advance the Lodge’s hospitality use for events such as the PGA Tour’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and the world-renowned Concours d’ Elegance collector car event in August, as well as the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Open tournaments (Men’s Open is scheduled for 2027).

While there were several aspects of the Lodge modernization, the main focus was to significantly expand the kitchen and dining capacity and dramatically improve the interiors and consumer experience. The structural scope required extensive as-built investigation and coordination due to limited documentation of the existing building and the discovery of unforeseen framing and foundations conditions, concealed infrastructure, and varying structural systems throughout. The full suite of construction materials and analysis was used to incorporate new construction within the existing structure, including concrete walls, strategic structural steel and CMU, and predominantly versatile wood framing. After studying more elaborate systems, the foundation system utilized concrete mat slabs and deepened foundations to account for old drainage fill, a buried culvert, and historic stone foundation walls.

Close collaboration with the contractor, design team, and geotechnical consultant allowed the project to adapt while maintaining the accelerated construction schedule—all work had to be completed within the six months between the Pro-Am and the Concours events. Construction operation was often continuous with up to 200 workers on site.

An important part of the project involved preserving the character of this iconic building. Structural improvements were carefully integrated to strengthen and modernize the facility for long-term performance while expanding opportunities and maintaining the historic character and architectural features that define the Lodge experience. Creative and practical solutions coordinated with the contractor in real-time were the keys to success.

As the first major holistic improvement to this hallmark structure, the Lodge at Pebble Beach is now fully outfitted for the next generations of luxury golf enthusiasts. With spectacular ocean views, the updated dining and event spaces boast vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, a vibrant central bar, a glass-enclosed wine room, and an expanded outdoor terrace, adding a modern touch to this historic and beloved building.
