Santa Rosa Junior College’s new Construction Training Center (CTC) on the Petaluma campus is a 10,000-square-foot lab space with two classrooms, restrooms, utilities, and tool storage. The flexible space allows students to experience hands-on training in construction, carpentry, electrical work, residential HVACR, plumbing, fire-resilient landscaping, and water resources technology. The construction training program is aimed to equip students with necessary skills and knowledge to play a vital role in the rebuilding of homes, infrastructure, and communities affected by destructive wildfires across Sonoma County.
The CTC is a steel-framed structure with untopped metal deck roof framing supported by sloped steel beams. The interior storage and restroom space is framed with cold-formed steel joists and bearing walls. The lateral force-resisting system is steel special concentric braced frames for the main structure and metal stud shear walls for the interior storage and restroom space. All parts of the structure are supported by shallow spread footings. This structure accommodates architectural features such as multiple skylights, large clerestory windows, a covered entry canopy, four roll-up doors, and a 2,300-square-foot covered exterior workspace.
The state-of-the-art facility was funded by local donor Tipping Point, a local supporting grant from Bank of America, and by an $8.12 million federal disaster grant from the Economic Development Administration.
