Yes, an automated reply is sent to all applicants who apply online so that you know that we’ve received your information. As ZFA receives a large number of inquiries, we do not send customized replies to each applicant. If you want to follow up on a submission, please email [email protected].

If the position or office location you seek is not listed as an available position on our website, you may still apply for the position online using our form.

It is best to select the office(s) where you can see yourself most thriving. Being intentional and thoughtful about which location(s) you select is preferred over noting that you would go to any of our locations.

If you have submitted your application online or have met us at a career fair, we will consider your application among the many we receive. We will request you to fill out an application, provide your unofficial transcripts (if you are in school), and will ask for an example of your work (either a project/assignment at school or from a past internship). We will also send a short quiz. If selected as one of our top candidates, we will schedule a virtual interview with you and 1-2 managers.

After your interview, we will typically schedule one more interview with a different group of people, and we may offer to have you meet or talk with a younger staff member so you can get an idea of their experiences.

If you are selected to join our team, we will send a job offer letter and work with you to answer any other questions you have about our company and benefits.

Yes! Meeting ZFA staff at a career fair or other in-person opportunity is the best way to give your application a leg up.

Yes, we have both formal and informal mentorship at ZFA. Our formal mentorship program pairs you with a mentor–sometimes from your office, sometimes from another office–and you meet up with that person 4-10 times throughout the year to discuss whatever is on your mind and help guide you through the different parts of your career.

Upon starting at ZFA, we seek to have engineers involved in design projects right away. You begin with smaller tasks–things you are likely familiar with from school or previous work experience–then work up to larger tasks with more autonomy.

ZFA’s project work ranges widely between residential, commercial, education, healthcare, and other specialized services like equipment anchorage, historic preservation, and sculptures. About half of our work is new construction and half is retrofit of existing structures. You could be working on any of these types of projects, and you will likely rotate through a few different types of projects in your first year at ZFA.

Each new employee is paired with a “buddy” to assist with all the day-to-day questions that someone new has. (Where are the pens? How do I work the coffee maker? Where do I store these types of files on the server?) Your buddy is your go-to resource for any and all questions you have when you first start–because there will be many!

Every new employee also works with a variety of mid-level staff–Engineers, Senior Engineers, Associates–and with managers. Mid-level staff and managers will help explain tasks, check in on progress, answer questions, and ensure that you have enough (but not too much!) work to fill your days.
